Following a gun siege in Sydney in 2014, Australian Rachel Jacobs saw a woman she presumed was Muslim remove her hijab while sitting next to her on the train. Jacobs ran after the woman and said to her:
“Put it back on, I’ll walk with you”
The story inspired fellow Australian Tessa Kum (@SirTessa) to tweet:
“If you reg take the #373 bus b/w Coogee/MartinPl, wear religious attire, & don’t feel safe alone: I’ll ride with you. @ me for schedule”
This prompted a viral campaign with the hashtag #illridewithyou, which was endorsed across the globe as an honourable and kind response to victims of racial tension, following what was considered to be a terrorist attack.
The #illridewithyou viral movement tells us that, although there are still people who feel the effects of prejudice, there are many that are willing to look beyond our differences and stand together against discrimination.
